Oil Musical Giant Gets Lavish Staging in Virginia, by Philip Boroff
Like a Texas ranch with newly tapped oil reserves, the world premiere of the musical Giant at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia, offered a rich, sprawling evening. Nearly four hours long, the $1.1 million epic presented 29 songs by Michael John LaChiusa, a top-flight cast of 21 directed by Jonathan Butterell and an orchestra of 15—all playing to a modest house of 276 seats.
