Catherine Zeta-Jones' name over the title and on the marquee at the Walter Kerr Theatre helps goose ticket sales for A Little Night Music. But her glamorous presence can't cover the shortfalls in Trevor Nunn's dim and downsized production from London's Menier Chocolate Factory. It doesn't do justice to Stephen Sondheim's most elegant musical.
It's showtime at the Apollo for Dreamgirls. The new touring version of the Broadway classic launched yesterday in Harlem, and although the show could use more scenic pizazz, it's lively and packed with talent.
After seeing Ruhl's previous works Dead Man's Cell Phone, Eurydice, and The Clean House, one expects an element of fantasy. She ends with one as she suggests an answer to the show's central question: To be seen, you have to really see what's around you. Sweet. But it's too lite to be illuminating.
